ALCHEMY ARTISTS RESIDENCY

BROKEN STONE WINERY, HILLER, ONTARIO

I was invited to join the Alchemy Artists Residency which is built on the pillars of art, food, farm, and community. It has been operating for seven years in Prince Edward County. The residency is mostly women artists and my partner Barbara Brown has been in the residency twice before. I was pleased to be asked to go this year. I had no idea what I wanted to do. Each artist is paired with either a farm or a winery. I was partnered with the Broken Stone Winery.

I had no plan. I just showed up, looked around, took some photos, talked to the vintners. The owner Tim Keupher gave me a tour of the vineyards, and showed me the sheep, chickens, ducks on the farm. I asked him why he called it the Broken Stone Winery. He said that there were a lot of broken stones in the ground …

I got mud on my shoes. When I scraped the mud off, I had the idea to put the mud in a yoghurt container, strained out the rocks and twigs, and I added some water, stirred it up and let it settle, drained off the water, and added clear acrylic medium and stirred up a pleasant brown mud paint.

I made some sketches of the farm - landscape made with the land itself.

The geologic profile of the land is Hillier Clay Loam which is good for wine grape-growing. I looked up a geological survey online and I found a diagram of the Hillier Clay Loam profile. So I made a painting based on this, and it was displayed at the winery in the autumn of 2023.

Mending Broken Stones

The name Broken Stone Winery was provoking me. I wrapped some field stones with embroidery thread and some others with twine I found. Some broken stones were glued together with paint, then wrapped with twine. Mended broken stones.

What do the photographer and the painter have in common?

Barbara Brown and Dan Sharp have been partners for over 30 years, while maintaining separate studios and art practices. This exhibition is a two-person show of photographs by Brown and paintings by Sharp, to see if there are resonances, echoes, and complementarities. It is a compare and contrast exercise for the two artists to see how their art talks to each other, a dialogue or an argument of colour and form.

Canadian artist Juan Geuer’s groundbreaking work sits in the threshold between science and art. It bridges the human condition, in all its various states, and the carbon-based ecosystems and oxygenated atmospheres upon which we depend. Geuer’s work will be in dialogue with artists with whom he either collaborated, influenced, or worked with in parallel.

Artist residency and exhibition

JAIPUR KALA CHAUPAL

Jaipur, India

From October 19th to November 4th 2017 I was in residence at the Hotel Diggi Palace in Jaipur, India. This was an artist residency opportunity to work and exhibit in Jaipur, as part of the Jaipur Kala Chaupal festival. I was one of three Canadians at the residency, with Barbara Brown and Jennifer Macklem.
